I insist on the opinion I’ve always held: that the construction of the Athens tramway was a mistake, and that the same money should have been used for more metro (subway) lines/stations.
Trams are successfully used in smaller cities (mostly between 0.5 and 1.5 million people):
- Zurich (0.5m)
- Amsterdam (1m)
- Milan (1.5m)
- Barcelona (2m)
- Karlsruhe (0.3m)
- Geneva (0.3m)
Notable exceptions:
- Paris (since 2006)
- Istanbul
The proposal for a 16km tram network in London was rejected.

I totally agree. in addition I think that a bicycle way would have worked better. It is impossible to ride a bike anywhere in Athens. The space occupied by the tram way would have been better used for pedestrian and bike ways.
Grazie, cara. Ma tu non scrivi piu’ nel tuo?
