I have stated often my support for solar power. Especially if combined with an infrastructure to store excess power in order to use it at peak demand, or in the absence of sunshine, it is the perfect power source:
- it doesn’t pollute
- it is inexhaustible
- it is practically infinite
- it frees us of dependence from the middle east, russia, etc
- it is well-suited for distributed production, which skips the losses during transmission & distribution
However, recently another advantage came to my mind, that I hadn’t thought of before, and haven’t seen mentioned anywhere either: solar power cools the planet. What I mean is that, the solar energy captured by a solar panel would otherwise be absorbed by the earth’s surface and thus be converted into heat, deteriorating global warming. Instead, if we use solar power for our energy needs, not only do we not create heat as a by-product of the power cycle, but we are actually cooling down the planet too!
